Plywood vs MDF vs Particle Board: What to Use Where in a Pune Home
The carcass material you never see determines whether your furniture lasts five years or twenty. Here is where each one belongs.

Clients spend weeks choosing a laminate colour and about four minutes on the material underneath it. That ratio is backwards. The finish decides how your home looks on day one; the core decides how it looks in year eight.
The four materials
| Material | Water resistance | Cost | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| BWP plywood | Excellent | High | Kitchen base units, wardrobe bottoms, vanities |
| BWR plywood | Good | Medium-high | General carcass, wardrobes, storage |
| HDF-HMR | Good | Medium | Shutters, profiled doors |
| MDF | Poor | Low-medium | Panelling, ceiling details, dry decorative work |
| Particle board | Very poor | Low | Not recommended for permanent built-ins |
Why Pune specifically changes the answer
Pune gets a genuine monsoon. Indoor relative humidity sits high for months, and ground-floor flats and older buildings hold that moisture longer. Materials that perform acceptably in a dry climate behave differently here. This is the reason we do not use particle board in wet zones at all, and why we push plywood in kitchens even when the budget is tight.
The edge banding problem
MDF fails at its edges. If the edge banding lifts — and over years, at a much-used cabinet, it does — moisture gets into the core and the panel swells irreversibly. Plywood in the same position gets damp and dries out. This single failure mode is most of the practical difference between the two.
Room by room
- Kitchen base units — BWP plywood, no substitutions
- Kitchen wall units — BWR plywood is acceptable
- Wardrobe carcass — BWR plywood; BWP for the bottom-most shelf
- Bathroom vanity — BWP plywood or WPC
- TV unit and console — BWR plywood or HDF-HMR
- Wall panelling and ceiling detail — MDF is fine and takes paint beautifully
- Study table, bed, seating — BWR plywood
Is expensive plywood always better?
No. Above a certain grade you are paying for brand and warranty rather than measurable performance, and there is genuine counterfeiting in the Indian plywood market. What matters is buying a real ISI-graded board from a vendor who will stand behind it, which is a supply-chain question more than a price question. We buy from a fixed set of suppliers for exactly this reason.
